Vernal Pool Observation Area

Vernal pools and the animals that inhabit them are of increasing concern in Connecticut. Residents often unwittingly fill in these pools, thereby destroying breeding grounds for a wide range of species, particularly amphibians inculding spotted salamander and wood frog.

With funding from the Ray Smith Endowment, Roaring Brook Nature Center constructed an observation deck and educational signage at the vernal pool at the Nature Center. The goal of this project is to educate visitors as to the importance of these areas, so as to help save some of these "at risk" micro-habitats that are fast disappearing from our landscape.
