Wildlife Rehabilitation Clinic

Take a behind the scenes look into the Wildlife Rehabilitation Program at the Roaring Brook Nature Center! Find out about the hundreds of injured and orphaned wild animals that find their way to the Nature Center each year and the specialized care we provide.

This program is geared for anyone who is 18 and up and has an interest in wildlife rehabilitation.

There is no cost to the program but donations to the Rehabilitation Program are much appreciated.

Pre-registration required.

Groundhog Day Hike

Will the Groundhog see his shadow and what does it really mean?

Walk gently through the forest to uncover the mysteries of wildlife habits in mid-winter.

Cost: $4 members, $6 nonmembers: half-price children.

Pre-registration is not required.

Family Winter Survival

What do you do if you get lost in the woods in winter? Learn what basic supplies you may need to survive a night outdoors.

Program includes fire building and shelter construction.

Dress for winter weather.

Not geared for children under 9.

Cost: $5 members, $7 nonmembers;
        $15/family (members), $20/family (nonmembers).

Join us as we celebrate Valentine's Week with our wonderful animals. Each day we will make special Valentines for our animals and loved ones. Special visit with the animal of the day. Crafts and animal demo free with admission to the Nature Center.

Maple Sugaring in Your Own Backyard

Our annual demonstration teaches you how to make maple syrup the easy way. We’ll cover the entire process from identifying the tree to the best part – tasting the final product. Cost: $4 members; $6 nonmembers; half-price children Pre-registration is not required.

Owl Prowl

Listen and look for barred owls and other nocturnal creatures along our trails.

Pre-registration is required for this program as space is limited.

Eggs, Eggs and MORE Eggs! Scavenger Hunt

Spring is the season of eggs – bird eggs, frog eggs, turtle eggs, fish eggs!  Help us find them and learn about the animals that laid them. We have scattered eggs around the trail and inside the Nature Center for you to find.

Scavenger Hunt Map will be sold in Nature Center Store for $2.00 plus admission to the Nature Center.

No need to preregister.

Family Raptor Day

Join us for a fun day of children & adult programing featuring the Roaring Brook birds of prey. 

Cost: $4 members, $6 nonmembers

Flatbread Pizza Night Fundraiser
for the Nature Center

Bring your friends, bring your family for dinner at Flatbread’s at The Shoppes at the Farmington Valley.

A percentage of the pizza sales supports the Nature Center.

Vernal Pool Walk /Amphibians Program

Learn about the amphibians that inhabit vernal pools as we search for nocturnal wildlife.

Weekend Bird Walks

An early morning walk through Werner’s Woods provides welcome sights and sounds for beginning birders as well as those with more experience in the field.

Bird walks are not geared for younger children.

Annual Mother's Day Wildflower Talk & Walk

Connecticut has a myriad of spring wildflowers. Find out why they bloom in the spring, where to find them, how they got their names and what makes these plants so special.

Join us for a special lecture at 1 pm and at 2 pm for a guided walk through our woods and our native plant gardens looking for wildflowers. 

Geared for all ages.

Cost: $4 members; $6 nonmembers; children half-price.  Moms admitted free.

Muddy Kids are Healthy Kids

There is so much going on beneath our feet in soil – it’s an intriguing ecosystem and it keeps our plants, and our children healthy!  Join us as we get the dirt on soil and learn how playing in the mud actually benefits kids.

Hunt for Wild Common Milkweed
with “Wildman” Steve Brill

Naturalist/author “Wildman” Steve Brill will lead one of his world famous foraging tours on his annual visit to the Nature Center, scheduled as late spring herbs & greens should be popping up.

A 30-minute talk followed by a 90-minute walking tour along the trails of Werner’s Woods in search of wild food.

Space is limited. Preregistration recommended.

Summer Solstice Father’s Day Hike

Join us on the first day of summer for guided walk on the Quarry Trail and learn about the history of the land before it became Werner’s Woods.

Adventure Story Time
for children ages 2-5

Adventure Story Time for children ages 2-5 will be held on selected Monday afternoons each month. Adults and children can participate in a shared story with a craft and short walk.

Children must be accompanied by an adult

There is a charge of $3/child; maximum $6 per family

Discovery Day Programs

Registration is open for Discovery Days, the Nature Center’s enrichment series for children. Four week programs are offered for pre-schoolers and a parent, for students in kindergarten and kindergarten readiness programs and for students in grades 1-3. For more details, click here.

The cost of each four-week session is $40.00 for members, $50.00 for nonmembers. A $10 discount is extended to families with a second child attending during the same time period. Portions of the program are held outdoors, please dress accordingly.

Winter Wild

Ever wonder where the animals go in the winter or how the snow and ice form! If so, here is a winter vacation program for you! These three days will be packed full of discovery and winter adventure. Each day has a theme and is geared for students in Kindergarten through 5th Grade.

February Nature Carnival

Fun with snow and ice, animal tracking and, depending upon weather conditions, snowshoeing or even maple sugaring will be part of this two-day vacation program. Each day has a theme and is geared for students in Kindergarten through 5th Grade.

Wednesday in the Woods

Designed for Homeschool children, this class is a hands-on, active exploration of nature in winter. Themes may include: hibernation, active animals, animal tracking and plant survival.

A portion of each class will be held outdoors. Please dress for the weather.

Cost:$45 per child per classes.

Pre-registration is required.

Guided Nature Walks


Nature Walks

During July and August, group nature walks may be scheduled by individuals, families or by organized groups on selected weekday afternoons. Walks may be general or may focus on a specific topic of interest. Call the Nature Center for additional information.

The Werner Woods trails are open year-round for self-guided tours.  Trail guide books are available in the Nature Center store for $2.00.


Volunteers Needed!
  • Volunteers interested in working with the Nature Center's Raptor Care Program (must be over 18 years of age), please call the Center (860) 693-0263. Whatever time you can offer will be appreciated.

Birthday Party Opportunities

During the school year, the Nature Center offers birthday parties on Saturdays (morning parties from 10:30 AM-12:30 PM, afternoon parties from 1:30-3:30 PM) and on selected weekday afternoons from 3:00 to 5:00 PM.

During July and August, the Nature Center will offer birthday parties on selected weekday afternoons from 1:30 – 3:30 PM. (Please note that birthday party availability is subject to the Nature Center’s summer program schedule of classes and public events).

Parties include a live animal demonstration, nature walk, and use of our auditorium for holding the party. Cost of a party is $150 for members, $175 for nonmembers.
